Tyrone Sampson (Goizueta, ’20) moved to Atlanta to attend Emory University in order to strengthen his technical abilities in the investment management industry. Through his time at Emory, he has embraced the opportunities and resources provided to Emory students to prepare him for his post-MBA career. In our interview, Sampson shared his journey, and how he’s preparing for a full-time opportunity within Investment Management upon graduation.
MBASchooled: What did you do prior to business school, and why did you choose to attend business school?
Prior to business school, I founded and managed an investment partnership investing primarily in public equities. I choose to attend business school to improve my technical skills as the Investment Management industry continues to embrace technical trading and enhance my leadership abilities as I seek to progress my career within Investment Management.
MBASchooled: Why did you choose Emory, and what were some of the highlights of your first year?
I chose Emory because of its small, tight knit community and the high engagement of Emory alumni with the Emory MBA community. Some of the highlights from my first year were practicing for interviews with other students recruiting in finance, spending time with my core team, and Thursday evening KEGS, weekly social event for MBA students, with my classmates.
MBASchooled: During your first year, what resources/programs/experiences at Emory were most valuable to your learning and growth?
Emory has a large assortment of resources/programs/experiences that added value to my learning and growth during my first year, but the most valuable in my opinion was my fellow classmates. Learning from their experiences, skill sets, and cultures was an amazing part of my first year and helped me further narrow down my career interest.
MBASchooled: How did you use resources at Emory to help you find your summer internship?
I used the Career Management Center to explore Investment Management opportunities and help navigate the interview and offer process to ensure that I was effectively managing communications with recruiters and alumni. For example, I used my career management coach to discuss recent alumni I could contact who work at companies on my target list to ask about the interview process and their experiences at the specific companies.
MBASchooled: What were the most important skills you’ve built or strengthened in business school so far?
The most important skills I have built or strengthened were by ability to sell and my ability to lead groups of varying sizes. Attending the Goizueta Leadership Reaction Course was a valuable leadership experience for me that gave me the opportunity to lead a group of four students through various obstacles while receiving leadership feedback from experienced military leaders at Fort Benning in Georgia.
MBASchooled: As a Consortium Fellow, what role has the Consortium played in your MBA Experience?
CSGM has played a pivotal role in providing a supportive group of like-minded individuals seeking to gain the most out of the MBA experience at Emory and among other top MBA programs.
What advice do you have for prospective MBA candidates to make the most of their MBA Experience?
Be intentional about what you want to get out of the MBA experience and stick to those intentions. Don’t forget to have fun.
